The True Evil's Of Piracy

Is Piracy the new norm? "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." So say the ancient philosophers, and perhaps it's true. In this day and age it's difficult to tell. One man's evil is another man's good.

Enter Archon. For a galactic year he has terrorized the Pegasi sector. At first he was considered a mere upstart needing to be put down. Then he became a thorn in the side of the Empire. Before long the now well documented actions in Cuchua brought about the Pegasi War which at one stage involved all four of the most powerful factions within the Imperium. His name became synonymous with evil.

What now? If good men did do something and the result was nothing then where then does humanity turn? Has the Kumo Crew become immoveable and what does this mean for galactic peace? These are the questions many of the galaxies movers and shakers now ponder.

Lines of Communication

As violence and destruction engulf inhabited space, a new organisation has formed seeking to resolve disputes before they spiral out of control.

The Galactic Council, located in the neutral system of HIP 118213 aboard Lorenz Hub, was conceived by diplomat Eddard Faucon as a response to this hostile diplomatic landscape.

"As the galaxy becomes ever more crowded, we need to bring its disparate parts together so we can learn to co-exist in peace, otherwise we condemn ourselves to a future of habitual war and chaos. It is my dream to heal our divisions and unify our fractured galaxy- from the mightiest power to the smallest political group, all must have a voice, and all must be heard."

Two treaties have already been completed, one between Sirius Gov and the Interstellar Communist Union, and another formalising diplomatic relations between Utopia and the Da Vinci Corporation.

Data Analysis Reveals Administrative Flaws

Recent studies of major powers have revealed critical errors, according latest data analysis experts Lux Analysis Group. Data Technician Rose Draper, who led the study of galactic power activity over the past nine months, explained the think tank’s findings:

“We’re seeing a lot of illogical activities going on in the major powers. Redistribution and administration seem to be particular problem areas, with contracts, aid packages, and supplies going astray to systems with no value, or worse, that are actually a drain on resources. We believe that the majority of this activity is being caused by inferior communications and substandard bureaucracy across the board. Our advice to major powers is to implement an optimised administration in order to avoid wastage of supplies and miscommunication with potential member systems.”

One system administrator, who wished to remain anonymous, stated: "Every week we're getting overwhelming surpluses here, whilst headquarters acquires other systems into the network that are a huge drain on resources. This is costing us badly. I wish someone in charge would do something and rein in the overzealous enthusiasm of some independently contracted pilots."

Updated - Changing Face of Senate could Threaten Emperor's Progress

The Eridani Dispatch editorial team is sorry to confirm that this report was based on unsubstantiated rumors and accusations. While corporate interests in the Empire may be on the rise, there is no indication that the patronage networks of established Senators in the Imperial Senate are under their influence. Furthermore, the spokesperson for the Chapterhouse of Inquisition, Selune d'Amenta, claims that she was entirely misquoted. For these reasons, the editorial team of the Eridani Dispatch officially retracts support of the story but will leave it available for review in a show of transparency for its readers.

Findings published by advocacy group Chapterhouse of Inquisition point to increased corporate influence in the Senate.

The coronation of Arissa Lavigny-Duval had commentators predicting resurgence for patronage governments in political centres throughout the Empire, driven by the new emperor's lauded traditionalism.

Chapterhouse's report paints a different picture, highlighting Nyalayan, Vish, and Ocairi, examples of key systems that formerly sent Senators from among their patrons to Achenar, but in recent weeks have seen their governments restructured - and new Senators sponsored by corporations instead.

Selune Saunders, a spokesperson for the Chapterhouse HQ in Kamadhenu, explained the report's implications, “The changing make-up of the Senate means the Emperor will face serious hurdles passing her legislation.

“Measures seen to unduly favour the Empire's various Pacts, Societies, & Leagues – widely supportive of the Emperor - will be robustly challenged; as will measures that risk curtailing freedoms of the corporate sphere.”

Saunders refused to take questions on social media rumours that Federation mercenaries covertly support certain corporations in the Empire; independent newsfeeds link the changes in the Senate with recent slow-downs in Arissa Lavigny-Duval's anti-corruption projects.

A Strange Destiny

Kumo Crew warlord Archon Delaine unwittingly became the centre of a local religious dispute earlier this week. During their New Year conclave, a schism appeared within the priesthood of the ascetic Faithful Cult of Mannovalo on the meaning of a prophecy that may involve the pirate chieftain.

It seems Archon Delaine fits the description of a 300 year old prophecy describing a white-haired conqueror. A splinter group calling themselves the True Faithful Cult of Mannovalo claims that it is Delaine’s destiny to convert all Kumo vessels into generational colony ships and lead them to a new home in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is counter to the orthodoxy promoted by the Righteous Faithful Cult of Mannovalo. They instead believe that the warlord will give away all his ill-gotten gains and become the new high priest of their pacifistic religion on Mannovalo 1.

This religious feud threatens the stability of the Mannovalo theocracy as planetside protests increase in intensity. The Kumo Crew has not issued any comment on the issue at the time of broadcast.

Breaking the Syndicate

Wolf 1301, long under the control of the Wolf 1301 Syndicate, has made serious strides in breaking the power of the drug cartel. The Syndicate, which made a fortune selling Wolf Fesh to black markets across the galaxy, was recently run out of Saunders’ Dive by the up and coming E.X.O. democratic independents.

Fesh is illegal under the new government, and E.X.O. security patrols have bust the drugs trade, beating back the Syndicate to one of the system’s outposts. Several arrests of high-ranking Syndicate members have already been made, and local observers are anticipating an imminent raid on the outpost to break the Syndicate’s power.

The E.X.O. government is hoping that the drugs trade will at last be eliminated, but social commentators are warning that the popularity of fesh may see the recipe for the synthetic psychotrope turn up again once the high profile campaign has ended.

What's happening in Takurua?

In the past few weeks, political analysts have expressed confusion at traffic reports coming in from the Sirius Corporation terraforming base Foothold Station in the backwater system of Takurua, home to Utopia's much-publicised deep space commune. Reports indicate that the number of Utopia dissidents being removed from the system for processing far exceeds the 100,000 Sirius Corp terraforming personnel currently stationed at Foothold. We caught up with Utopia futurologist and project lead Dr Saeed McNamara at Foothold Station for comment.

"There's nothing unusual about it." he told our reporter, "We help thousands of Utopia citizens make the pilgrimage here every week so they can experience the unique qualities of extreme isolation, much like the monasteries of the ancient past. We also put them through tests to test their suitability for a special self-improvement initiative we're developing. We're looking for the best and brightest, so most are simply reassigned after a couple of weeks of meditation and testing."

"I don't like the term 'dissident'", he added "It implies they're good for nothing, when really there's a special place for everyone in Utopia, and we don't give up until we've found the place where everyone can flourish."

Dr McNamara declined to comment on the nature of the "self-improvement" program, stating only that if successful, it would be a huge step forward for all mankind.

The Price Of Peace

After fighting the Imperial war machine for months, the Kumo Crew are once again creating headlines with an apparent offer to Utopia for a non-aggression pact in return for weekly tribute.

Sources close to the Kumo Crew have stated they will leave Utopian systems alone ‘if they pay us the proper respect’. It is understood this offer stems from a meeting held between the two powers in earlier weeks.

However, this controversial gesture was received with skepticism from Utopian officials:

“Utopia does not appease pirates and we will not submit to tyranny and greed. We are always striving to promote galactic stability, but a lasting peace cannot be bought or sold”.

With the offer set to expire in one standard week, the galactic community now looks to Utopia for the result of any final agreement.

The Cost Of War

The Social Ngbato Labour Union has contacted the Empire to plead for leniency on its people. It is joined by representatives of Lusonda and Huichi. Their systems have faced the brunt of the Imperial assault against Archon Delaine and regularly see thousands of ships destroyed each week.

"This is beyond necessary. The Kumo fleet working in Ngbato continues to be crippled by targeted attacks, but the fighting inevitably escalates, affecting the trade and health of our system."

It is a regular priority target of the Imperium, and the latest records indicate 3,300 ships destroyed in 5 days of fighting.

"Our request is simple. Those ships carry our own families and those of our loved ones. Destroying more than is militarily strategic only results in senseless deaths. Please prevent it."

One Imperial Commander responded with some regret: "The Empire salutes the dedication of its pilots, however, we encourage our commanders to redirect their attention once military undermining targets have been reached within the system."

The Kumo Crew response was measured; "We will believe it when we see it."

This is war, and war is often nonsensical.
