The Fuel rats have become famous throughout the galaxy for those stranded and in need of help. Iridium Wing offers a different type of service. One that Commander Outlawstar can attest to upon returning from his own six month deep space exploration.

Needing to reach the very distant Khun system and fearful of attacks, he requested Iridium Wing to escort him there safely. Their trained pilots meet fellow commanders several light years from inhabited space and stay with the explorer until docking is completed. In this instance Commander Outlawstar found himself further indebted by their provision of a rare alloy to ensure a smooth transaction with the local engineer.

Many explorers find themselves returning to the bubble of occupied space laden with data they can't afford to lose. Yet just as many have studiously avoided combat in the depths of space and some even remove shielding and weapons to enable longer jumps and quicker journeys. Stranded Pilot Rescued by Survey Team

A stranded pilot was rescued today after a Universal Cartographics survey team arrived in the unexplored star system, some 1000 ly from Sol. The captain of the SS Amundsen stated in a transmission sent back to inhabited space:

“We picked up a short-range distress signal from the third planet, a metal-rich world with close to 1g but an unbreathable atmosphere. The pilot is suffering from malnutrition and psychological trauma but is otherwise unharmed. We are treating him in our medbay and are confident of a full physical recovery. I can confirm that we still intend to complete our four week survey mission before returning with our data.”

Lindelani Mduduzi was stranded on the planet over three years ago when his craft’s frame shift drive was irreparably damaged after a close encounter with the system’s binary stars, apparently after having set out without filing a flight plan with any authorities. He commented:

“I took my eye off the ball and it cost me. I’m just glad I’ll be back in the Federation soon. Is Halsey still running the show?”

The Pilot’s Federation recommends that all explorers file a flight plan with the appropriate authorities before embarking on expeditions.

What's Going On Out There?

A small expedition to Sagittarius A* recently returned to civilized space with a startling tale.

“Something’s not right out there,” said Kyle Klasky, the expedition’s leader. He explained that his group had encountered several incidents during their trip that could not be easily explained away.

“We’ve all seen shipwrecks on our journeys,” he said, visibly concerned. “But we were finding them quite frequently on this trip. Not just single ships either, but several at a time. I suppose it could be pirates, but I find that difficult to believe.”

“We also noticed high-energy wake signatures near black holes on more than one occasion. Maybe they were from other explorers, but how many times does it have to happen before it stops being a coincidence?”

Critics are dismissing the testimony as being ridiculous exaggerations, but Klasky insists on its veracity, saying “Look, if you don’t believe me, go out there and see for yourself!”

Into the Void

After the announcement by the Explorer's Association, Utopian deep space engineers are once more preparing to apply their expertise by aiding the construction of a new space station within the challenging environment of the Pleiades Nebula.

Drawing from experiences of the highly successful deep space commune of Takurua, Utopian engineers along with Sirius Inc explorers are readying a task force to aid in this new venture.

Utopian engineer Del Arris officially confirmed Utopias response in a later statement:

“Utopia and Sirius Inc have begun assembling teams of explorers, traders and engineers to assist in this task, and will shortly begin deployment.

Our experience with Foothold Orbital at Takurua, and activities on the fringes of inhabited space in Sothis will prove invaluable in dealing with the dangers and pitfalls of such a perilous undertaking. Together we will redefine the frontiers of knowledge, and challenge what is possible.”

The Outer Limits

One team of explorers is challenging the loner stereotype. There is something awe inspiring about watching multiple explorers form a co-ordinated jump to hyper space and then see them reappear at the final destination. It is a far cry from that special commander who knows they are on their own fighting the heat damage if they happen to drop next to an unexpectedly large star.

The First Great Expedition is organized by several commanders who have created a community of family and friends. They can help new explorers just setting off into the dark, and plan new group goals such as the current Sagittarius-Carina expedition. Over 30 commanders are involved in that particular adventure, and one month in it shows no sign of letting up.

A simple search of any database for "The First Great Expedition" will direct an explorer to a place where they can communicate with the commanders of this great undertaking and become part of the story. In their own words they have strived from the outset to "provide cohesion, cooperation and a shared sense of purpose." Rumor is that they've achieved just that.

Sagittarius A* - The Galaxy's Latest Vacation Spot

For many the hustle and bustle which is the sea of humanity from Lave to Mikunn is something to be escaped. Commanders select the exotic sight of Sagitrarius A* to relax, take a break and open up a canister of beer.

Language is no barrier as pilots turn to translators when welcoming visitors from afar. As with any destination, fuel can sometimes be a problem, but friendlies like Commander Metta have it all figured out. "I store Fuel Rat limpets for deep space rescue and provide beer, liquor and rares to explorers that celebrate making it to the core."

It's a journey not to be undertaken lightly and often takes 2 weeks or more. But perhaps you want a rest from the constant wars, bounties and trading. Sagittarius A* might just be the perfect vacation spot.
